Five killed after illegal mine collapse in China
Beijing: At least five people have died and another has been injured after a collapse at an illegal mining site in southwestern China’s Yunnan province, according to reports from the Associated Press citing state media Xinhua.
The incident occurred around 4:30 am on Sunday in Baiwu Village, Huize County. Authorities have not confirmed the type of mine involved.
Following the collapse, six workers were initially trapped underground before rescue teams managed to pull them out.
Officials said the injured person is in stable condition, while five others later died from their injuries after being taken to hospital.
A full investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the collapse and to assess possible violations linked to the illegal mining operation.
The tragedy comes just a week after a deadly explosion at a coal mine in China’s northern Shaanxi province, which killed at least 82 people. Local authorities had previously stated that the operator of that mine had committed “serious violations” of mining regulations.
