Tehran: Iran has executed Erfan Kiani, a man accused of carrying out operations for Mossad during recent protests. According to the judiciary’s official portal, the execution was carried out after the Supreme Court of Iran upheld his death sentence.

Charges and Role During Protests

Authorities described Kiani as a key operative allegedly tasked with destabilising public order during unrest in Isfahan earlier this year. He was charged with multiple offences, including arson, destruction of property, possession of explosive materials, and attacks on security personnel.

Officials also accused him of spreading fear among civilians and blocking public roads as part of coordinated activities linked to foreign intelligence operations.

Rising Executions Amid Conflict

The execution comes amid a broader increase in the use of capital punishment in Iran following escalating tensions involving the United States and Israel. Since late February, when hostilities intensified, authorities have reportedly carried out several executions tied to protest-related and security cases.

Reports indicate that at least nine individuals connected to recent unrest have been executed since mid-March, reflecting a significant rise in such actions.

Government Claims and Opposition Allegations

Iranian authorities have maintained that the protests earlier this year were influenced by foreign actors, including the United States, Israel, and opposition groups such as the People's Mujahedin of Iran. Officials argue that strong measures are necessary to maintain national security and public order.

However, critics have questioned these claims, raising concerns about the fairness of trials and the treatment of detainees.

Global Human Rights Concerns

International organisations, including Amnesty International, have repeatedly criticised Iran’s use of the death penalty. Rights groups warn that the country remains among the highest users of capital punishment globally and have expressed alarm over the pace of recent executions.

They have also highlighted concerns over due process, transparency, and access to legal representation in such cases.
