Firefighter feared among the dead
Local media reported that a firefighter was among the dead, though this could not be immediately confirmed. Police said they received numerous phone calls from people trapped inside.
The fire department issued a 'number 4' alert
The rapidly spreading fire engulfed bamboo scaffolding erected on the building's exterior, causing intense flames and thick smoke. Live video showed firefighters pouring water on the blaze from high-rise ladder trucks. The fire broke out in the afternoon. The fire department declared it a "No. 4 Alert," the second-highest level of fire severity.
The massive fire broke out in Tai Po, a suburb of Hong Kong, near the border with the Chinese city of Shenzhen.
Bamboo scaffolding is used in construction
Bamboo scaffolding is commonly used in building construction and renovation in Hong Kong. However, the government announced earlier this year that it would be gradually phased out from public projects due to safety concerns.
