The US military operation in Venezuela has created fissures within NATO. European Union stands between Denmark and Trump’s plan to acquire Greenland.

New Delhi: The US President Donald Trump’s territorial ambitions in Greenland supported by his rant about military might to warn global rivals has developed fault lines between NATO’s European allies. White House’s plans to acquire Greenland, caterwauling it as national security priority.
The rhetoric that Washington is drawing up diplomatic, economic and military plans to acquire Greenland is being contested by various European Union countries. But most of the European Union countries are taking this rhetoric seriously keeping in mind Trump’s Arctic ambitions. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that any attempt to take over Greenland by force by the US may spell the end of NATO.
Trump’s Greenland Fixation
During his first term as president of the United States Donald Trump floated the idea of buying Greenland from Denmark. This Proposal was soon shot down by Copenhagen.

In the second term Trump shifted his stance from offering of buy Greenland to use of military force to acquire the island. This move is considered to be provocative by Denmark. Most of the EU political leaders do not consider it as a fringe idea after the US Venezuela adventure. The growing China and Russia influence in Europe and Latin America is propelling the United States to claim Greenland by labelling it as a national security priority.
US loses High Moral Ground
The United States and the European Union held high moral ground to defend liberal democracies across the world. But after Trump’s military power threatened the territorial integrity of Venezuela and demolished democratically elected government of Nicolas Maduro Moros. Latin American leaders have condemned the US military action in Venezuela and called it as a breach of international law. Many NATO members have indirectly opposed the United States and demanded peaceful restoration of democracy keeping in mind the UN Charter. Trump was criticised for seizing of Venezuela in an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

European Union supports Denmark
France, Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Poland and Spain have expressed their solidarity with Denmark on Greenland. In a joint statement they said that Greenland belongs to its people and its future is safe with Denmark not with Washington. As trust deficit widens between the United States and Europe. EU is trying to cobble formidable alliance to defend European interests without the US support.
