New Delhi: Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has rejected suggestions that Islamabad could join the Abraham Accords as part of wider diplomatic efforts linked to ongoing US-Iran negotiations.

Speaking to Pakistani news channel Samaa TV, Asif said joining such an agreement would go against Pakistan’s “fundamental ideologies.” His remarks came amid reports that the United States was encouraging several countries, including Pakistan, to formally recognise Israel under an expanded regional peace framework.

“Personally, I don’t think we should join any such accord that clashes with our fundamental ideologies,” Asif said during the interview.

Minister Questions Engagement With Israel

The Pakistani minister also raised doubts over engaging diplomatically with Israel, questioning the possibility of trust between the two countries.

“How could Pakistan sit down with those people whose word cannot be trusted even for a single day?” he said. Asif further stated that Pakistan’s official position on Israel remains unchanged and pointed out that Pakistani passports do not recognise Israel.

When asked whether Pakistan had been approached directly by the United States regarding the Abraham Accords, Asif replied, “We have a very clear stance that this is not acceptable to us.”

Trump Pushes Wider Abraham Accords Expansion

The Abraham Accords were introduced during Donald Trump’s presidency in 2020 to normalise relations between Israel and several Arab nations. The United Arab Emirates and Bahrain were among the first countries to sign the agreement, followed later by Morocco and Sudan.

Recently, Trump reportedly urged countries including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey and Jordan to join the accords as part of broader efforts aimed at stabilising the Middle East and supporting diplomatic engagement involving Iran.

In a social media post, Trump said wider participation in the Abraham Accords could help bring long-term peace and regional cooperation.

Pakistan Reaffirms Palestine Position

Pakistan has consistently maintained that it will not recognise Israel until a viable and independent Palestinian state is established under a two-state solution.

Earlier this year, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar had also reiterated that Islamabad’s decades-old policy regarding Palestine and Israel remained unchanged.

Pakistan has historically opposed diplomatic recognition of Israel since its formation, linking any future recognition directly to the resolution of the Palestinian issue.
