Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump sparked international controversy on Tuesday by posting images on his Truth Social platform that depict an altered map of the United States including Canada, Greenland and Venezuela as part of U.S. territory.

One image shows Trump with European leaders in the Oval Office beside a map where the three nations are covered by the U.S. flag, while another portrays him, Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio planting a U.S. flag in Greenland next to a sign reading “Greenland US Territory Est. 2026.”

Images Trigger Diplomatic Reactions

The posts come amid Trump’s renewed push for Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, which he has insisted is vital for American and global security. In his Truth Social message, Trump reiterated, “Greenland is imperative for National and World Security. There can be no going back,” following a call with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte about the Arctic region.

Although the map is visually striking, it appears to be AI-generated and symbolic rather than an official claim of territorial annexation. Nonetheless, it has drawn sharp reactions from allies and on social media, with many interpreting it as provocative or suggestive of expansionist ambitions.

Push for Greenland and Other Claims

Trump has repeatedly called for the United States to acquire Greenland, citing strategic interests in the Arctic, particularly in countering perceived threats from Russia and China. He previously floated the idea of Canada becoming the 51st U.S. state a notion firmly rejected by Canadian leaders who stressed the importance of sovereignty and reality over such proposals.

In the same Truth Social post series, Trump referenced Venezuela in the altered map, linking it to his administration’s ongoing involvement in the region after the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, though he did not outline specific plans for Venezuela.

Military Deployment to Greenland Amid Tensions

The map sharing coincides with a planned deployment of North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) aircraft to Greenland’s Pituffik Space Base, described by NORAD as part of long-planned defence activities coordinated with Denmark and Canada. Though routine, the timing has drawn attention against the backdrop of escalating rhetoric over Greenland.

Global Reaction and Diplomatic Implications

While the imagery itself may be symbolic, the broader context has intensified diplomatic dialogues about Arctic security, NATO cooperation, and respect for national sovereignty. European allies and regional partners are watching closely as Trump’s statements and actions continue to influence geopolitical dynamics.
