In a statement, Trump said the initiative is intended to support vessels that are not directly involved in the conflict but have been affected by the disruption of maritime routes.
According to the US President, several ships have been stranded for days and are facing shortages of essential supplies, including food and drinking water. Large crews onboard these vessels are reportedly struggling to maintain safe and sanitary conditions.
Trump emphasized that the operation is humanitarian in nature and meant to ensure that affected ships can safely resume their commercial activities.
While announcing the initiative, Trump also issued a strong warning to Iran, stating that any attempt to interfere with the evacuation process would be met with force. He reiterated that the safety of these ships is a priority and that the US is prepared to act if necessary.
At the same time, he noted that US officials are engaged in ongoing discussions with Iran, expressing cautious optimism about a potential resolution.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most vital oil transit routes, carrying nearly one-fifth of global oil supplies. The passage has remained largely restricted since late February, following escalating hostilities involving the US, Israel and Iran.
The disruption has significantly impacted global energy markets, contributing to volatility in crude oil prices.
The ongoing conflict has pushed crude oil prices higher, with global benchmarks witnessing sharp fluctuations in recent days. Rising fuel costs have also led to increased domestic pressure in the United States, where gasoline prices have surged significantly since the conflict began.
