Bangkok/Phnom Penh: Thailand and Cambodia are involved in a military conflict along their shared border, with tensions rising from a long-standing dispute. The fighting has continued for weeks, and on Thursday, soldiers from both countries shot at each other, leading to the deaths of at least nine civilians.

Most Casualties In Si Sa Ket

Thailand reported that most of the casualties happened in Si Sa Ket province, where six people were killed after gunfire hit a gas station.

So far, at least 15 people have been killed in the conflict, with 14 of them in the three border provinces. Tensions between the two countries have worsened since an armed clash in May, during which one soldier died.

Cambodian PM Slams

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has termed Thailand's airstrike as 'armed aggression' and warned of a strong response. He wrote on social media, 'Cambodia has always tried to find a solution peacefully, but in this situation we have no option but to use force in response.' The Prime Minister confirmed that Thailand targeted Cambodian military bases near Ta Moan Thom and Ta Krabe temples in Oddar Meanchey province and then extended the attack to Mom Bei area.

Both Blaming Each Other

Thailand has sent F-16 fighter jets to the border with Cambodia, and according to the Thai military, one of these planes fired into Cambodian territory, destroying a military base. Both countries have blamed each other for making the situation worse.

Cambodia has been accused of launching rockets into a Thai village and attacking a hospital, while Thailand has carried out airstrikes on Cambodian military positions, as reported by local media.

Emergency Meeting

Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Manet, has asked the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to hold an emergency meeting on the clashed between Thailand and Cambodian forces. He sent a letter to Pakistan's representative at the United Nations and the President of the Security Council for July 2025, Asim Iftikhar Ahmed.

Combodia PM Letter

The Cambodian Prime Minister said in his letter to the UN, "In view of the recent very serious attacks by Thailand, I urge you to immediately convene a meeting of the Security Council to stop Thailand's aggression.

This poses a serious threat to peace and stability in the region. In the letter, Manet accused Thailand of carrying out unprovoked, premeditated and deliberate attacks on Cambodian positions in the border areas.

"He claimed the attacks were unprovoked, planned, and intentional, and warned that they pose a serious threat to peace and stability in the region."
