New Delhi: Seven months after taking office for a second term, US President Donald Trump has nominated 38-year-old Sergio Gor as the new US ambassador to India. The appointment comes at a time when tensions have escalated in India-US relations, as the Trump administration has imposed a 50% tariff (import duty) on India and criticized India for buying Russian oil.

Trump praised Gore while announcing the nomination on his social media platform, 'Truth Social.' He said that Gore is a "great friend" who has been working with him for many years. He worked in Trump's presidential campaigns, published his bestselling books, and ran a large super PAC. Trump also stressed that in this most populous region of the world, he needs someone whom he can trust completely.

Sergio Gor expressed gratitude over this nomination and said that this would be the biggest honor of his life. Currently, Gore is serving as the director of the Presidential Personnel Office in the White House, where his role has been to appoint loyal supporters of Trump to government positions.

However, Gore has also been a controversial figure. This year, he caused tension between Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who even called Gore a "snake." According to US media, Gore was born in 1986 in Uzbekistan (then the Soviet Union). He came to the US with his family via Malta as a teenager and studied in Los Angeles.

Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs

It now remains to be seen how quickly the US Congress confirms his appointment. The post has been vacant since the departure of the previous ambassador, Eric Garcetti, in January. India would like an ambassador to be appointed as soon as possible so that there can be direct dialogue on bilateral issues.

In a new twist, Gore has been named not just ambassador to India but also 'Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs.' This is a new position, and India will be keen to know what its scope and responsibilities will be.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed the nomination, saying Gore would be an excellent representative for this important relationship. For India, the appointment of someone who is very close to Trump as ambassador could be a sign that the US prioritizes the relationship and wants to work directly to resolve conflicting issues.
