Washington: US President Donald Trump has declared that the ceasefire with Iran is effectively over following fresh American military strikes, while indicating that diplomatic engagement could still continue despite his doubts over its success.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the two-day NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Trump said he no longer believed the ceasefire remained in place.

"For me, I think it's over," Trump said when asked about the status of the ceasefire. He added that dealing with Iran had become "a waste of time."

Strikes follow attacks in Strait of Hormuz

Trump's remarks came just hours after the United States launched strikes on Iran. According to US officials, the military action was carried out in response to attacks on tankers operating in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's busiest energy shipping routes.

The latest escalation has added to concerns over regional stability and the possibility of further confrontation in the Middle East.

Diplomacy remains possible, but Trump is sceptical

Despite declaring the ceasefire over, Trump said US representatives could continue discussions with Iranian officials if they chose to do so. "They can talk, but I think they're wasting their time," he said, expressing little confidence that negotiations would produce meaningful results.

His comments reflect a tougher US stance after the latest military exchange, even as diplomatic channels technically remain open. The developments are expected to be closely watched by international allies amid continuing tensions in the region.
