New Delhi: Donald Trump's former advisor Peter Navarro is in the news these days for making controversial statements about India on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Navarro made serious allegations against India, like taking away jobs from America, promoting war by buying oil from Russia, and lying.

He said that India buys cheap oil from Russia only for profit, and the money received from this strengthens Russia's war machinery. Apart from this, he also said that India is harming the US economy with its high tariffs.

Fact-checking exposed the truth, and Navarro got angry

The Community Notes feature of the X platform did a fact check on Peter Navarro's post. In this note, Navarro's claims were described as false and misleading. Community Notes is a feature of X in which users can fact-check themselves and publicly prove the information to be true or false.

After this fact check, Peter Navarro got angry and criticized Elon Musk and his platform. He said that X is promoting one-sided propaganda and the "note" added about India is a lie.

Elon Musk's reply: "This platform belongs to the public."

X owner Elon Musk himself responded to Peter Navarro's allegations. Musk said, "On this platform, people decide the story. You hear all sides of the debate. Community Notes, correct everyone, there is nothing new in it.

He also said that data, code, and notes are all public, and X's AI tool 'Grok' does additional fact-checking, which prevents the spread of false information on the platform.

India's role in the controversy

This controversy is primarily based on misinformation about India, propagated by Peter Navarro, which was proved to be factually incorrect by X's fact-check system. India has previously clarified that it takes such decisions in view of its national interests, and it comes under the ambit of international rules regarding the purchase of cheap oil from Russia.

This entire incident shows how responsible speaking on social media is important. Due to fact-checking and open data systems, now misinformation can be challenged, even if it comes from a big leader or advisor. Elon Musk's response has made it clear that the X platform is for the public, and everyone is heard here**—not just the powerful.
