Sunscreen even on cloudy days (Img: Dynamite News)
New Delhi: Many people skip sunscreen when the sky is overcast, assuming clouds block harmful UV rays. However, dermatologists say that misconception can leave your skin vulnerable to damage.
While clouds reduce visible sunlight, up to 80% of ultraviolet (UV) rays can still penetrate cloud cover. That means your skin can still be exposed to UV radiation even when it doesn't feel hot or sunny.

UV rays are responsible for sunburn, premature skin ageing and pigmentation. Long-term exposure can also increase the risk of skin cancer. Daily sunscreen helps create a protective barrier against these harmful effects.
UVA rays, which are present throughout the year, penetrate deep into the skin and contribute to wrinkles, fine lines and loss of elasticity. Since UVA rays pass through clouds and even glass, sunscreen is essential indoors near windows as well.
People with acne marks, melasma or uneven skin tone may notice worsening pigmentation due to UV exposure—even on cloudy days. Regular sunscreen use helps prevent dark spots from becoming more noticeable.
