Dalai Lama Celebrates 90th Birthday: I am “just a simple Buddhist monk”

New Delhi: The spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists, the Dalai Lama, turns 90 today on Sunday. The Nobel laureate is regarded as one of the world’s most eminent religious leaders with a large following among all religions, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

Celebrations In Dharamshala

On the occasion of 90th Birthday of the Buddhist Spiritual Guru, the Dalai Lama, celebrations are hosted in Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh. Thousands of devotees are participating in the prayers for his long life. The Dalai Lama expressed hope to live for another 30 to 40 years. He said he wants to serve people until he is 130.

Several dignitaries including actor Richard Gere and Union Ministers are in attendance at the celebrations. The focus is also on the issue of succession. The current Dalai Lama's trust is set to choose his successor, which may lead to some tensions between India and China if the chosen successor is outside Chinese-controlled territories and is not approved by China.

Shelter In India

The 14th Dalai Lama fled his native place Tibet in 1959 during an unsuccessful uprising against Chinese rule. He, along with hundreds of thousands of Tibetans, took shelter in India. He has always advocated for a peaceful “Middle Way” to seek autonomy and religious freedom for the Tibetan people.

The Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso is based in Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh. He said he was "just a simple Buddhist monk" who normally did not engage in birthday celebrations.

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso, on his 90th birthday has shared a heartfelt message in which he called for "achieving peace of mind through cultivating a good heart and by being compassionate".

"On the occasion of my 90th birthday, I understand that well-wishers and friends in many places, including Tibetan communities, are gathering for celebrations. I particularly appreciate the fact that many of you are using the occasion to engage in initiatives that highlight the importance of compassion, warm-heartedness, and altruism," the Dalai Lama said in a post on X.

PM Modi Greets

On the 90th Birthday of Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated him today.

PM Modi has also shared an emotional message on the post on social media platform X. PM Modi wrote, 'I join 1.4 billion Indians in extending my heartfelt best wishes to His Holiness the Dalai Lama on his 90th birthday. He has been an enduring symbol of love, compassion, patience and moral discipline. His message has inspired respect and admiration among people of all religions. We wish him continued good health and long life.'
