Questions are being raised from many corners over govt bungalow of Dr Chandrachud when many dignitaries have overstayed in the govt accommodation earlier also.
Former CJI Dr DY Chandrachud
New Delhi: A strong buzz is blowing in the air since the time the Supreme Court communication of July 1 regarding the govt bungalow of Dr DY Chandrachud has appeared in the mainstream media, reports Dynamite News correspondent.
In a letter to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs the Apex Court has written that Dr Chandrachud is to vacate the official CJI accommodation because the special permission granted to him and the maximum six-month period allowed under official rules had already expired.
Big Questions Raised
A volley of questions are being raised from all over as to why such a letter to the Housing Ministry in the case of Dr Chandrachud only when many dignitaries have overstayed in the govt accommodation earlier also.
DN Investigation
Dynamite News investigation reveals that former CJIs UU Lalit (6 months) and NV Ramana (nearly 2 years) stayed in government accommodation post-retirement, but no questions were raised at the time.
Besides several other judges and senior officials have also continued to stay in government accommodation well beyond retirement, but their cases were never questioned.
It seems therefore obvious that Dr DY Chandrachud is being deliberately targeted under the pretext of government accommodation.
Ruling Dispensation Prejudice
The bias and prejudice of the ruling dispensation towards the former CJI are also manifested by the following:
1. Some of the key administrative decisions taken by Dr Chandrachud—such as installing glass panels and air conditioning in the Supreme Court corridors to protect lawyers and staff from heat, and launching a new Supreme Court logo designed by NIFT through the President—have been reversed.
2. The confidential letter sent by the Supreme Court to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs regarding his government accommodation was leaked to the media shortly after its issuance.
3. Dynamite News investigation further reveals that Dr Chandrachud never asked for any special privilege.
4. After retirement, Justice Chandrachud wanted to vacate the official residence for the incoming CJI Sanjiv Khanna. However, Justice Khanna reportedly said, “I will not shift into a new house for just 6 months, you may continue to stay for a few more days if you wish.”
5. Justice Chandrachud became CJI in November 2022, but shifted to the Krishna Menon Marg bungalow only a year later, in December 2023. He was quite content living in his smaller Tughlaq Road residence but moved due to the need to host international judges and High Commissioners.
6. Notably when Dr Chamdrachud was elevated from Allahabad to the Supreme Court in May 2016, he lived for eight months with simplicity in a single room on the third floor of UP Bhawan in Delhi.
7. It is also important to note that just a few days ago, the Secretary General met Dr Chandrachud and was clearly told that the accommodation would be vacated within days and all belongings were already packed.
Under such a scenario, why so much of a rush to send such a letter...and leak it too? All this clearly indicates an intentional attempt to malign the image of a globally respected jurist.
