Kurnool: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the devastating bus fire in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, which claimed the lives of at least 20 people early on Friday. He also announced financial assistance for the victims’ families and injured passengers to support them during this tragic time.

Taking to social media, PM Modi said he was “extremely saddened by the loss of lives due to a mishap in Kurnool district.” He extended his thoughts to the affected families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in the fire.

The Prime Minister further announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased. Those who sustained injuries in the fire would receive Rs 50,000 each.

Tragic Incident Details

The accident occurred in the early hours, around 3:30 am, near Chinnatekur village in Kallur mandal of Kurnool district. A private bus operated by Kaveri Travels, traveling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru, caught fire after colliding with a motorcycle on the highway.

Police reported that the two-wheeler got trapped under the bus, hitting the fuel tank, which triggered an immediate explosion. Most passengers were asleep when the fire broke out, leaving little time to escape. Out of approximately 44 passengers aboard, at least 20 were charred to death, while a dozen managed to escape with minor injuries.

Rescue Operations and Identification of Victims

The Kurnool District Collector, A Siri, confirmed that 21 passengers were rescued safely. He said that the accident occurred between 3:00 and 3:10 am, emphasizing that the collision led to a fuel leak and subsequent fire.

"Out of 41 passengers, 21 have been rescued safely. Among the remaining 20, the bodies of 11 have been identified so far. Efforts are underway to identify the rest," the collector stated, according to ANI.

Emergency services, including police and fire personnel, rushed to the scene to douse the flames. Scary visuals from the accident site showed the bus completely engulfed in fire. Once extinguished, the bus was left charred beyond recognition.
