New Delhi: The Central Government has implemented strict new regulations for digital content generated using Artificial Intelligence (AI) starting February 20. Under this, any photo, video, or audio created using AI will now be required to clearly display the "AI Generated" label. Furthermore, social media platforms will be required to remove objectionable or illegal content within three hours of receiving a complaint.

"Authenticity Labels" Necessary

At the AI Summit 2026 held on February 19, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need for "authenticity labels" on digital content. He said that just as food items have "nutrition labels," digital content should clearly indicate whether it is authentic or AI-generated. This will help people distinguish between fake and genuine content.

New Provisions and Rules

"AI Generated" Stamp on Videos and Photos
It will be mandatory to clearly display the label in the corner of every AI content. For example, an AI video of a politician will not be uploaded without a label.

'Digital DNA' in Metadata
Metadata hidden within the file will reveal when, with which AI tool, and on which platform the content was created. This technical marker will help investigating agencies reach the source of the crime.

Strict Action for Removing Labels
Removing labels or metadata in any way will be illegal. Platforms will be required to implement tools that prevent such tampering or automatically delete the content.

Strict Monitoring of Child Content and Deepfakes

Using AI to spread child pornography, fraud, weapons information, or impersonate someone will be considered a serious crime. Strict legal action will be taken in such cases.

Responsibility of Social Media Platforms

Users will now be required to declare whether content is AI-generated. Platforms will be required to implement tools that verify user claims. If AI content is published without disclosure, the company will also be held responsible.

The Ministry of Information Technology says these rules will create an “open, safe, trusted and accountable internet” and curb misinformation and identity theft spread through generative AI.
