New Delhi: India’s upcoming Census 2027 will mark a significant shift in how population data is collected, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging citizens to actively participate in what he described as a shared national responsibility. Speaking during his monthly radio address, he emphasized that the exercise goes beyond a government task and requires public cooperation for its success.

A Collective National Effort

Highlighting the scale and importance of the Census, the prime minister noted that it remains one of the largest administrative exercises in the world. He stressed that accurate data collection plays a critical role in shaping policies, development planning and welfare schemes. Citizens, he said, must engage proactively when approached by officials to ensure reliable outcomes.

Transition to a Digital Census

Census 2027 will be conducted using digital tools, replacing traditional paper-based methods. Data will be recorded electronically, minimizing manual errors and improving efficiency. Officials conducting the survey will use mobile applications to collect information directly during the household visits, ensuring the real-time data entry and streamlined processing.

Strong Focus on Data Security

Addressing concerns about privacy, Modi assured citizens that all information gathered during the Census will remain confidential. He underlined that robust digital safeguards have been put in place to protect sensitive data. According to him, the system has been designed to maintain the highest standards of security, building public trust in the process.

Introduction of Self-Enumeration

One of the key innovations in Census 2027 is the introduction of a self-enumeration facility. Citizens will be able to submit their details online up to 15 days before an official visit. Once the information is uploaded, individuals will receive a unique identification number via mobile or email, which can be presented to census personnel during verification.

This feature aims to make participation more convenient, allowing people to complete the process at their own pace while reducing the need for repeated data sharing.

Progress and Early Implementation

The prime minister noted that initial stages of the exercise are already underway in some regions. House-listing activities have begun where self-enumeration has been completed and data collection for approximately 1.2 crore households has been recorded so far.

He added that those familiar with previous Census exercises will notice a marked difference due to the integration of digital technologies, making the process faster and more efficient.
