New Delhi: The national capital experienced its first widespread heatwave of the season on Saturday, with temperatures soaring well above normal across the city. The Safdarjung weather station recorded a high of 42.8°C-over 5 degrees above average-marking one of the hottest April days in recent years.

These readings confirm a citywide heatwave, as most monitoring stations crossed the required thresholds.
What Qualifies as a Heatwave?
According to weather guidelines:
Temperatures must exceed 40°C and be at least 4.5°C above normal, or Reach 45°C regardless of deviation
At least two stations, including Safdarjung, must meet this criteria for a citywide declaration-which Delhi clearly did.
Warm Nights Add to Discomfort
The heat persisted even after sunset:
With no rainfall and little cooling overnight, residents faced uncomfortable conditions around the clock.

Relief Likely from April 27
While a yellow alert remains in place for Sunday, there is hope for some relief starting Monday:
Light rain, gusty winds (up to 50 km/h), and thunderstorms are likely between April 27 and 29.
Air Quality Also Worsens
Alongside the heat, air pollution levels have risen. The Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 243, placing it in the “poor” category. Conditions are expected to remain similar through Sunday.
Delhi is enduring intense heat for now, but a slight drop in temperature and some rain may bring much-needed relief early next week.
