Lucknow: In a consumer-friendly move, the Uttar Pradesh government led by Yogi Adityanath has announced that domestic electricity users will not face power disconnection for up to 30 days even if their account balance turns negative.
The policy applies to households with electricity connections of up to 1 kilowatt and is aimed at reducing inconvenience while ensuring uninterrupted power supply.

State Energy Minister Arvind Kumar Sharma said that officials have been directed to strictly follow the new rule. Consumers will now get a full billing cycle before any action is taken, giving them sufficient time to clear dues.
The move is expected to benefit a large number of small and low-consumption households across the state.
To improve communication and transparency, the government has also rolled out a five-stage SMS alert system. Consumers will receive multiple notifications before any potential disconnection.
Officials said this system ensures that users remain informed about their balance status and due payments, helping them avoid sudden service interruptions.
The relief measures have also been extended to consumers with connections of up to 2 kilowatts. For this category, electricity supply will continue even if the negative balance is up to ₹200.
These consumers will also be covered under the SMS alert mechanism, ensuring consistent communication regarding billing and usage.
Alongside policy changes, the government has strengthened power infrastructure to meet rising demand, especially during summer months. Authorities have installed around 30 lakh electricity poles and upgraded transformer capacity across multiple districts.
These upgrades are aimed at ensuring stable and reliable electricity supply during peak consumption periods.
The state government has emphasised that uninterrupted and quality electricity remains a top priority. With rising temperatures increasing power usage, the new measures are designed to prevent outages and improve consumer experience.
