Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has indicated that the long-awaited expansion and reshuffle of his Council of Ministers is likely to take place during the first two to three days of next week. The exercise is expected to bring renewed focus on ministerial appointments, regional representation and the political priorities of the National Conference-led government.

Speaking to reporters after meeting Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha at Lok Bhawan in Srinagar on Saturday, Omar said he had requested an early date for the cabinet expansion. The final schedule will be determined by the Lieutenant Governor, after which the formal exercise is expected to proceed.

The proposed reshuffle comes at a politically significant juncture for the Jammu and Kashmir government, with attention centred on the induction of new ministers, possible changes in portfolios and the broader implications for governance and party management.

Omar Abdullah Says Cabinet List Has Been Finalised

The Chief Minister said the selection of legislators for induction into the Council of Ministers had already been completed following consultations with National Conference president Farooq Abdullah. He indicated that the decision-making process was no longer open to further lobbying, suggesting that the party leadership had settled the names ahead of the formal announcement.

Omar’s remarks are likely to draw attention among party legislators and political observers, as the expansion could determine how ministerial responsibilities are distributed and which leaders are brought into the government. However, the Chief Minister has not publicly disclosed the names of the legislators expected to be inducted or outlined any proposed portfolio changes.

Omar Warns Aspirants Against Lobbying for Ministerial Berths

In a pointed message to party colleagues aspiring for ministerial positions, Omar urged them to stop contacting senior leaders in an attempt to influence the selection process. He said he had been receiving numerous phone calls and WhatsApp messages from aspirants highlighting their political backgrounds, experience and achievements.

The Chief Minister maintained that the leadership was already familiar with the credentials and contributions of party members and that further messages would not alter decisions that had been finalised. His appeal appeared aimed at bringing an end to speculation and lobbying ahead of the cabinet announcement.

The message also underlined the leadership’s effort to manage expectations within the party before the reshuffle, as prospective ministerial appointments often generate intense political interest among legislators and their supporters.

Lieutenant Governor to Decide Timing of Cabinet Expansion

Although Omar has indicated that the exercise is expected within the first two to three days of next week, the formal schedule remains subject to the Lieutenant Governor’s decision. The Chief Minister said he had requested an early date, with the expansion to follow once the timing was settled.

The distinction is significant because the announcement of a proposed timeline does not, by itself, confirm the exact date or the final composition of the Council of Ministers. The government is expected to clarify the details when the formal process is completed.

Regional Representation and Portfolio Changes in Focus

The cabinet expansion is likely to attract attention over the induction of new faces, the balance of regional representation between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley, and the allocation of ministerial responsibilities. Political observers will also be watching for indications of how the National Conference leadership intends to strengthen administrative coordination and manage political expectations within its ranks.

Any changes to the Council of Ministers could have implications for the functioning of the government, the distribution of key departments and the party’s engagement with its wider political constituency. However, the specific contours of the reshuffle remain unknown, as Omar has not released the list of prospective ministers or details of any proposed changes in portfolios.

For now, the Chief Minister has indicated that the names have been finalised after consultations with Farooq Abdullah, while the Lieutenant Governor is expected to determine the timing of the formal exercise. The next few days are therefore likely to be closely watched in Jammu and Kashmir’s political circles as the government prepares for a possible cabinet expansion.
