New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai has recemmonded to the Union Law Ministry the name of Justice Surya Kant as his successor, marking the initiation of the process to appoint the next Chief Justice of India.

Justice Surya Kant will be the 53rd CJI following the retirement of Chief Justice BR Gavai on 24 November, upon attaining the age of 65.

According to the established procedure, the Union Ministry of Law and Justice had recently written to CJI BR Gavai, seeking his recommendation for the next CJI.

Justice Surya Kant: A Brief Profile

The senior-most judge after CJI Gavai Justice Surya Kant was born on 10 February 1962 in a middle-class family.

Justice Suryakant was born in Hisar, Haryana. He graduated from Government Post Graduate College, Hisar, in 1981. He then completed his law studies from Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984. That same year, Justice Suryakant began practicing law at the Hisar District Court.

After practicing there for a year, he moved to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Due to his diligent work and professional competence, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2004.

Judge Suryakant subsequently served as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2018. He was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019.

How Is Chief Justice Selected In India?

Traditionally, approximately a month before the current Chief Justice retires, the Union Law Ministry seeks his recommendation for the next CJI. The current CJI then recommends the name of the next judge. During this process, it is largely decided who will become the next Chief Justice of the country.

The retirement age for Supreme Court judges is 65 years. Justice Suryakant will also serve as Chief Justice within this age limit.

Justice Suryakant's Expected Tenure

If Justice Suryakant becomes the next CJI, his tenure will be approximately 1.2 years. Given his experience and deep judicial understanding, it is believed that he will make a significant contribution to maintaining the dignity and impartiality of the judiciary in the Supreme Court.
