New Delhi: The Meghalaya Assembly witnessed an unusual moment on Tuesday when NPP MLA Mehtab Chandee A Sangma questioned her husband, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, over delays in key livestock education projects.

Raising the matter in the House, the Gambegre MLA sought details on the progress of a proposed veterinary college, two fisheries colleges, and a dairy college that were approved by the Cabinet in 2022. She also highlighted the shortage of staff at veterinary training centres across the state.

Responding on behalf of the government, the Chief Minister said the institutions were planned to strengthen the livestock sector, noting that a large section of the state’s population depends on animal husbandry. He acknowledged concerns over manpower shortages and assured the House that steps are being taken to fill vacant posts on priority.

Addressing delays in preparing the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), Sangma said the process was slowed due to challenges such as land identification and manpower planning.

Around 800 acres of land have reportedly been identified in Kirdemkulai, Ri-Bhoi district, for the proposed veterinary college, with the project estimated to cost approximately Rs334 crore. The Chief Minister assured members that the government is mindful of the financial requirements and will work to speed up implementation.
