Monsoon set to break the heatwave
New Delhi: The monsoon may arrive in the country ahead of schedule. Typically, the monsoon reaches Kerala by June 1st; however, this year, it could make an early arrival.
Weather experts believe that conditions in the southeast Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea appear favorable for an early onset of the monsoon.
Due to a weather system formed in the Bay of Bengal, weather activity has intensified across most parts of the country. Meteorologists suggest that current conditions in the southeast Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea are becoming highly conducive to an early monsoon arrival.
A low-pressure area has formed in the southwest sector of the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify further over the next few hours. Under the influence of this system, rainfall activity is set to increase across several states in South India. Furthermore, driven by this system, the monsoon is advancing rapidly in a northward direction.
Alert for Thunderstorms and Rain in North India Today
An alert for thunderstorms and rain has been issued for five states today, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Rain is forecast for all districts of Bihar and Uttarakhand, as well as for 38 districts within Uttar Pradesh. In Himachal Pradesh, daily life in the Kullu district has been disrupted by storms and rainfall. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued 'Orange' and 'Yellow' alerts for the state covering the next two days.
Continued Rainfall in South and Northeast India
The spell of rainfall is expected to continue across several states in South and Northeast India. According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rainfall is likely in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka between May 14th and May 17th. Additionally, good rainfall is anticipated in various locations across other northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, and Manipur.
The impact of the weather system formed in the Bay of Bengal will also be clearly evident in Odisha, where rain is forecast for several parts of the state over the next six days. A 'Yellow Alert' has been issued for 20 districts of Odisha, warning of rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds.
When Will the Monsoon Arrive?
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that conditions are rapidly becoming favorable for the advancement of the Southwest Monsoon. By the end of the week, the monsoon is expected to make its entry into parts of the South Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
During this period, various parts of the country will experience a mix of weather conditions—including rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and hailstorms—while some regions may continue to face intense heat.
According to the Meteorological Department, a low-pressure area that had formed over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, near the northern coast of Sri Lanka, is now moving in a northerly direction. Consequently, strong winds accompanied by heavy rainfall are anticipated across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and several parts of Eastern India.
Weather Changes in North India
According to DTE, a Western Disturbance persists as a cyclonic circulation in the upper air levels. Under its influence, light to moderate rainfall is likely in several areas of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Western Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan between May 12 and May 15.
Accompanied by thunder and lightning, wind speeds could reach between 30 and 60 kilometers per hour. There is also a possibility of dust storms occurring in Eastern Rajasthan.
The Meteorological Department has advised against venturing outdoors during adverse weather conditions. In the hilly states of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, rain and snowfall are expected to continue. There is also a possibility of hailstorms in certain locations, which could cause damage to fruit and vegetable crops.
Rain and Strong Winds in Eastern India
Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, and Odisha will continue to experience the effects of rain and strong winds over the next few days. Hailstorms are possible in Bihar, while Jharkhand and Odisha may witness strong winds accompanied by thunder. A 'Yellow Alert' for heavy rainfall (64.5–115.5 mm) remains in effect for Sikkim and the hilly regions of North Bengal.
Rain and Winds in South India
Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Kerala are also expected to experience spells of rain accompanied by thunder and lightning. Winds gusting at speeds of 30–50 km/h may blow across several locations.
Where Will Heatwaves and Severe Heat Prevail?
According to a report by 'Down to Earth', while several states are finding relief through rainfall, parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra continue to grapple with severe heat. Heatwaves are likely to occur in Western Rajasthan and Gujarat between May 12 and May 17. Temperatures may also rise in Eastern Rajasthan, Western Madhya Pradesh, Central Maharashtra, and Marathwada.
