Delhi-NCR is facing a sharp winter chill with a cold-wave alert, hazardous air quality, and thick morning fog–but no rain in sight today. The IMD warns of dropping temperatures in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram, while AQI levels have surged into the “severe” category.
Fog and Smog Blanket NCR: IMD Warns of Further Temperature Drop
New Delhi: The Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold wave warning for Delhi-NCR today. Temperatures are dropping across the region, with a blanket of fog and haze expected, especially in the early morning.
Due to this cold, wind speeds are also low, allowing pollution particles to settle, further deteriorating air quality.
Delhi AQI: Hundreds gather, dozens held as India Gate sees protest against air pollution
Air quality in Delhi-NCR is extremely severe. According to reports from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and other agencies, the AQI has reached the "Severe" category.
The situation is so severe that Stage III of the GRAP (Graded Response Action Plan) control measures have been implemented, including restrictions on construction activities and a limit on the number of vehicles.
Low winds and stagnation have prevented smoke and particles from dispersing into the air, further concentrating pollution.
The maximum temperature in Noida today is expected to hover around 25-26 degrees Celsius, but slow winds will likely cause a buildup of particulate matter.
The temperature in Gurugram will remain the same, but winds are blowing slightly stronger (from the northwest).
There is also a possibility of fog in Ghaziabad, and pollution levels remain severe, with a significant drop in temperatures expected.
There is no possibility of rain in Delhi-NCR today. The sky appears to be clear, but fog and smog may persist in the early morning.
This haze and pollution combined can impair visibility and pose a health risk, especially for those with respiratory conditions.
Delhi-NCR chokes under severe pollution; AQI crosses 400 in multiple areas
There will be no rain in Delhi-NCR today, but instead, there will be cold, fog, and severe pollution. The IMD warning and CPCB data indicate that this is not only a time of weather stress but also a health concern. It is crucial for the public to take appropriate safety measures, as this combination of toxic air and smog can be dangerous with every breath.
