New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Maldives ostensibly highlighted the deep and strong ties between India and Maldives. He said that India is the closest and most trusted neighbour of Maldives, which has been the first to come forward to help in every crisis and hour of need. This reflects India's "Neighbourhood First" policy approach, in which Maldives has a special and important place.

Prime Minister Modi also reminded in his speech that whenever Maldives has gone through any crisis - whether it was a natural disaster or the global pandemic Covid-19 - India has always played the role of 'First Responder'. He also said that from supplying essential goods to handling the economy after the pandemic, India and Maldives have worked together.

Apart from this, India and Maldives have signed 4 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and 3 key agreements:

  • Free Trade Agreement (FTA) discussions have officially begun
  • India has provided debt relief on loans it previously funded
  • A ₹4,850 crore line of credit has been extended
