Senior journalist Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty has been elected as the first woman President of the Press Club of India, winning by a massive margin. Her victory marks a historic milestone for the institution and a significant moment for Indian journalism.
New Delhi: A new and historic chapter has been added to the legacy of the Press Club of India (PCI). Senior journalist Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty has been elected as the first woman President of the prestigious institution.
This achievement is being hailed not only as a milestone for the organization but also as a significant moment for Indian journalism. Until now, no woman had ever held the highest office in PCI, making this election truly historic.
According to the election results, Sangeeta Barooah received a total of 1,019 votes, far surpassing her competitors. Her opponents, Atul Mishra and Arun Sharma, received only 129 and 89 votes respectively.
The overwhelming victory highlights the strong trust and confidence PCI members have in her leadership and vision.
It is noteworthy that Sangeeta Barooah was elected Vice President in the PCI Election 2024. Her long-standing experience in journalism, independent thinking, and bold viewpoints have set her apart from other candidates.
Under her leadership, her panel achieved an unprecedented feat by winning all 21 positions, achieving a clean sweep of 21-0.
In the race for Vice President, Jatin Gandhi secured a decisive victory with 1,029 votes, defeating his closest rival Prahlad Singh Rajput by over 900 votes.

For the position of General Secretary, Afzal Imam won with 948 votes, surpassing Gyan Prakash by a significant margin. Aditi Rajput was elected Treasurer and P.R. Sunil as Joint Secretary unopposed, reflecting widespread consensus within the organization.
The newly formed 16-member Managing Committee includes several senior and distinguished journalists. Members include Neeraj Kumar, Abhishek Kumar Singh, Janvani Sen, Ashok Kaushik, Kallol Bhattacharya, Praveen Jain, Agraj Pratap Singh, Manoj Sharma, Noyanima Basu, P.B. Suresh, V.P. Pandey, Prem Bahukhundi, Sneha Bhura, Javed Akhtar, Rezaul Hasan Laskar, and Sunil Kumar. Their strong support reflects the democratic spirit of the Press Club.
Reacting to her victory, Sangeeta Barooah said that the result reflects the members’ trust in her panel’s commitment to independent, impartial, and responsible journalism. She added that her aim is to make PCI a stronger, more inclusive, and vocal platform advocating for the rights of journalists.
