New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor introduced three private member bills in the Lok Sabha, the most important of which is a bill to criminalize marital rape. Tharoor said that a woman's bodily autonomy should remain intact even after marriage and the law must recognize this. He emphasized that India must uphold its constitutional values.
Shashi Tharoor said that marriage is not merely a family contract, but a matter of individual rights. He wrote on the social media platform X that 'no means no' should not only be a principle but a part of every woman's fundamental right. Tharoor also clarified that the issue of marital rape is not related to marriage itself, but to violence and the absence of consent.

Tharoor introduced this bill as a private member bill. A private member bill is a bill introduced by a member of parliament who is not a minister. This initiative aims to promote debate on constitutional and social issues in Parliament. Through this bill, Tharoor has tried to strengthen the safety and rights of women.
Shashi Tharoor also introduced two other private member bills. The first bill relates to a permanent commission for the reorganization of states. The objective is to base decisions on creating new states or altering the boundaries of existing states on data, census information, economic viability, national unity, and public opinion.
The third bill introduced was titled the ‘Right to Disconnect,’ aimed at limiting employees' working hours and preventing burnout. Tharoor stated that 51 percent of India's population works more than 49 hours a week, and 78 percent experience mental and physical exhaustion.

Tharoor said that it is time for India to grant women their fundamental rights. Criminalizing marital rape and providing employees with the right to disconnect are crucial steps from both a constitutional and social perspective. This initiative will provide legal protection to the rights of both women and employees and improve their quality of life.
