Sikkim Tunnel Tragedy: 8 Dead, Over 18 Feared Trapped as Methane Leak Hampers Rescue

New Delhi: A major accident at an under-construction hydroelectric tunnel in South Sikkim has claimed eight lives, while more than 18 workers are still feared trapped. Rescue teams are battling hazardous conditions as a suspected methane gas leak continues to hamper operations inside the tunnel.

Landslide Blocks Tunnel, Workers Trapped

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon inside the Samardung tunnel, where construction is underway for the Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project. According to officials, a landslide inside the tunnel blocked the passage, trapping several workers deep underground. The exact cause of the collapse is still under investigation.

Methane Leak Creates Major Challenge

Rescue efforts have been severely affected by high methane levels inside the tunnel. Officials said the concentration of gas has made it unsafe for emergency personnel to reach the section where the trapped workers are believed to be. Some members of the initial rescue team reportedly experienced breathing difficulties and dizziness after entering the tunnel and were later shifted to a nearby hospital.

Multi-Agency Rescue Operation Underway

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Sikkim Police and Fire & Emergency Services have been deployed at the site. So far, 12 workers have been rescued, while search operations continue for those still missing. Traffic movement in the surrounding area has also been regulated to ensure uninterrupted rescue work.

Administration Focused on Saving Lives

District officials said the priority remains the safe evacuation of all trapped workers. According to survivors, a loud blast-like sound was heard moments before the landslide, prompting several workers to flee. Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact number of people trapped and are continuing assessment as rescue teams work in difficult conditions.
