New Delhi: Tensions have escalated between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and central agencies in West Bengal. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided the TMC's political consultancy firm, I-PAC, and the residence of its head, Pratik Jain, in Kolkata. The ED claims the raids were part of a financial and legal investigation into the firm and its co-founder's office. The TMC alleges this is a conspiracy to intimidate the party and exert political pressure in an election year.

Chaos in Kolkata and Rally Preparations

The raids, which began at 6 a.m. on Thursday, lasted nearly nine hours. At 2 p.m., TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee will lead a march from Jadavpur 8B bus stand to Hazra crossing. She described the ED's action as "politically motivated," saying it aims to intimidate the ruling party ahead of the assembly elections. Mamata Banerjee has announced a massive rally, which she will directly lead.

Protests in Delhi and Detention of MPs

TMC MPs protested outside Union Home Minister Amit Shah's office in Delhi. During this period, eight MPs, including Derek O'Brien, Mahua Moitra, and Kirti Azad, were detained. Protesters chanted slogans that Modi-Shah's dirty tricks would not work in Bengal. Mahua Moitra said that the entire country was watching how elected MPs were being treated. Derek O'Brien also supported the protest, saying that the rights of MPs were being violated.

TMC's Allegation: Political Pressure and Data Capture

TMC alleged that the ED was seizing party strategic documents and data ahead of the elections. The party filed a petition in the Kolkata High Court, calling the ED's action illegal and politically motivated. The petition stated that the seizure of data and documents was against the law and should be immediately revoked.

BJP's Stance and Political Controversy

West Bengal BJP President and MP Samik Bhattacharya condemned the protest by TMC MPs in Delhi. He said that the public has understood the TMC and the party's protests are ridiculous. The BJP alleges that the TMC and corruption are synonymous and that the party is not serious about combating corruption.

The ED's action in Bengal has thus heated up the political atmosphere and increased tensions between the ruling party and the opposition in an election year.
