New Delhi: The Unique Identification Authority of India has rolled out an updated Aadhaar app, offering several new features aimed at reducing reliance on physical documents. Alongside this upgrade, the agency has issued a comprehensive advisory highlighting critical measures for protecting Aadhaar data from cyber fraud, identity theft, and financial scams.
Aadhaar is more than just a card. It acts as a key to multiple essential services, including banking, telecom, and government schemes. In the wrong hands, biometric and demographic information linked to Aadhaar can be exploited for online fraud, financial scams, and other forms of identity theft. The UIDAI stresses that proactive security measures are crucial for every Aadhaar holder.
1. Never Share Your OTP
The UIDAI warns users not to share their Aadhaar-linked One-Time Password with anyone. The OTP serves as a final line of security, and without it, unauthorized access to accounts or personal information is prevented.
2. Use a Masked Aadhaar
Whenever identification is required for services like hotel check-ins or purchasing SIM cards, it is advised to use a Masked Aadhaar. This version conceals the first eight digits, displaying only the last four, reducing the risk of your full Aadhaar number being misused.

3. Enable Biometric Locking
Adding another layer of protection, Aadhaar holders can lock their biometrics via the official app or website. Locking fingerprints, iris scans, or facial recognition data ensures that scammers cannot misuse biometric authentication without manual unlocking by the user.
4. Avoid Sharing Aadhaar Details Online
The UIDAI strongly cautions against posting photos or images of your Aadhaar card on social media or public digital platforms. Sharing such information online exposes personal data to potential fraudsters who can harvest it for illegal purposes.
5. Use Official Helplines in Case of Suspicious Activity
In the event of suspected data compromise or cybercrime, users are advised to immediately contact the relevant authorities. UIDAI has provided dedicated helplines for such emergencies: the Cybercrime Helpline at 1930 and the UIDAI Helpline at 1947. Prompt action can prevent further misuse of personal information.
