New Delhi: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has implemented new rules to make Aadhaar updates faster and more convenient. The revised system allows Aadhaar holders to update key demographic details including name, date of birth, address, and mobile number completely online through the myAadhaar portal.

This marks a major shift from the earlier process where users had to visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra for most updates. The portal now uses government databases such as PAN and passport to cross-verify changes, making the process smoother and more secure.

However, UIDAI clarified that biometric updates including fingerprints, iris scans, or photographs will still require a physical visit to an Aadhaar enrolment centre for security reasons.

New Aadhaar Update Fees Announced

Along with the procedural changes, UIDAI has revised the fee structure for Aadhaar updates.

  • Updating demographic details like name, date of birth, or mobile number will now cost ₹75.
  • Updating biometric details such as fingerprints or iris scans will cost ₹125.
  • If both demographic and biometric updates are done together, the demographic update will be free of charge.

In a welcome move, UIDAI has also allowed free online document updates on the myAadhaar portal until June 14, 2026. After this deadline, similar charges may apply.

Moreover, children between 5 and 17 years of age will be able to update their biometrics free of cost, ensuring their Aadhaar data remains accurate as they grow.

Aadhaar-PAN Linking Now Mandatory

Another major rule that came into effect on November 1 is the mandatory Aadhaar-PAN linking. The UIDAI has reinforced that all Aadhaar holders must link their Aadhaar with their PAN by December 31, 2025.

If the linking is not completed by the deadline, the PAN will be deactivated from January 1, 2026. Additionally, new PAN applicants will now have to authenticate their Aadhaar during registration, ensuring a faster and paperless verification process.

Failure to link Aadhaar with PAN may result in restrictions on financial transactions and potential penalties, making timely compliance essential for all taxpayers.

A Step Toward Seamless Digital Governance

With these reforms, UIDAI aims to create a more transparent, accessible, and user-friendly Aadhaar ecosystem. The focus on digital updates and integration with PAN highlights India’s continued push toward a unified digital identity system that simplifies life for millions of citizens.
