Rahul Gandhi Attacks Modi Over Iranian Warship Incident Near Sri Lanka
New Delhi: Amid rising tensions in West Asia, Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He questioned the Prime Minister's silence on the sinking of an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean. He said that the conflict has now reached India's doorstep, and the government should take a clear stand at this time.
Rahul Gandhi, posting on the social media platform X, said that the sinking of an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean is extremely serious. He alleged that the ship was targeted by an American submarine near Sri Lanka. Rahul said that despite such a major incident, there has been no response from Prime Minister Modi.
The world has entered a volatile phase. Stormy seas lie ahead.
India’s oil supplies are under threat, with more than 40% of our imports transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The situation is even worse for LPG and LNG.
The conflict has reached our backyard, with an Iranian warship…

He wrote that the country needs strong and stable leadership at this time, but the government is remaining silent on the issue. Rahul Gandhi also alleged that the current government has weakened India's strategic autonomy.
According to reports, the Iranian warship "Iris Dena" was returning from the International Fleet Review 2026 and Milan 2026 naval exercises held in Visakhapatnam. India had invited the ship to participate in these events. This incident has raised several diplomatic and security concerns.
Rahul Gandhi also expressed concern about India's energy security due to the increasing tensions in the Gulf region. He said that more than 40 percent of India's total oil imports come through the Strait of Hormuz. If the conflict escalates in the region, it could directly impact India's oil supply and energy prices. He also said that LPG and LNG supplies are also likely to be seriously affected.
India's former Foreign Secretary Kanwal Sibal also expressed concern about the incident. He says the Iranian warship participated in the naval exercise at India's invitation, so the attack on it could be considered a disregard for India's sensitivities. According to Sibal, ships in such exercises are usually unarmed, so this attack raises serious questions.
Following this incident, Iran has issued a stern warning to the United States. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi said the US would regret its actions. According to reports, there were approximately 180 people on board the ship. The Sri Lankan Navy has so far recovered 87 bodies and rescued 32 people, who have been admitted to a hospital in Galle city.
