Chandigarh-Manali Highway blocked due to landslides
Shimla: Multiple landslides and flash floods have ravaged several regions in the state throwing life out of gear. The fury has caused widespread damage of public utilities and claimed hundreds of lives, reports Dynamite News correspondent.
The Chandigarh–Manali National Highway is still blocked due to several landslides and flash floods caused by massive downpour in the region.
The Weather Office has declared a Yellow Alert for Chamba and Kangra. The warning has been issued of heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls for today. There is also posibility of low visibility due to dense fog in these areas.
The Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) reports that as of the evening of August 17 352 state roads remain closed. Among them are the three principal national highways. According to ANI 116 water supply systems have been damaged and 1067 power transformers are not functioning. Since 20 June 263 people have been killed and extensive damage has been caused by the heavy monsoon rains.
Out of these 136 perished as a result of rain-related incidents such as house collapses flash floods and landslides. Road accidents claimed the lives of the remaining 127 people. There are 201 closed roads in the Mandi district compared to 63 in Kullu and 27 in Kangra. Landslides and floods have also caused the national highways NH-305 in Kullu NH-05 in Kinnaur and NH-21 in Mandi to become blocked. The power source is also negatively impacted. Mandi has 385 transformers out of service Kullu district has 557 and Lahaul-Spiti has 112.
There is also damage to the water supply systems in Mandi 44 systems are impacted and in Kullu nine. Officials say they are making every effort to address these issues as soon as possible. However the work is being slowed down by heavy rain frequent landslides and obstructions in high mountain regions.
In many districts particularly Mandi Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti where excessive rainfall is still impeding power supply water services and road connectivity the situation is still dire according to the HPSDMA.
Officials went on to say that with 201 closures including the vital NH-03 Mandi has suffered the most from road connectivity issues. There are still 63 blocked roads in Kullu including NH-305 in Khanag. In the meantime a landslide at Tinku Nalla in Kinnaur has caused traffic jams along NH-05. .
