New Delhi: Residents across Delhi-NCR woke up to cloudy skies and a weather warning on Friday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for the region. The weather agency has predicted thunderstorms, lightning, light to moderate rainfall and strong winds that could reach speeds of up to 70 kmph, with gusts touching 80 kmph in some areas.

The alert covers Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and adjoining regions, where weather conditions are expected to remain unstable throughout the day.

Delhi Weather Today: Will rain, thunderstorms and 70 kmph winds bring relief from the intense heat?

Thunderstorms Likely Through The Day

According to the IMD, multiple spells of rain and thunderstorms are likely during the morning, afternoon and evening hours. Along with rainfall, residents can expect gusty winds ranging between 40 and 50 kmph, which may become stronger during intense thunderstorm activity.

The department has advised people to remain cautious while travelling and avoid taking shelter under trees or near weak structures during strong winds and lightning.

Sudden Change In Weather Pattern

Weather experts attribute the sudden shift in conditions to a cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and adjoining areas. The system has increased atmospheric instability across northwest India, creating favourable conditions for thunderstorms and rainfall.

The impact of the weather system was already visible on Thursday night when several parts of Delhi, Noida and Gurugram witnessed rain, lightning and strong winds. The showers brought significant relief from the intense summer heat that had gripped the region over the past few days.

Relief From Heatwave Conditions

The expected rainfall is likely to bring down daytime temperatures and improve overall weather conditions across Delhi-NCR. Cloud cover and intermittent showers are expected to keep temperatures below recent highs, offering relief to residents struggling with humid and hot conditions.

Neighbouring states, including Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan, are also expected to witness similar weather activity over the next 24 hours.

Authorities Advise Caution

Officials have urged residents to stay updated with weather advisories and plan travel accordingly. Temporary disruptions due to waterlogging, reduced visibility and traffic congestion cannot be ruled out during periods of heavy rain and strong winds.

The IMD expects the weather activity to continue over the next few days, with conditions likely to improve gradually after June 15.
