India is witnessing a sharp change in weather patterns on January 10, 2026. While northern and central regions remain under severe cold wave, dense fog, and chilly conditions, southern states are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall due to a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal.
Weather Takes Sharp Turn Across India; Rain, Cold Wave Alerts Issued
New Delhi: The weather across the country has once again taken a turn. While North and Central India are reeling under severe cold, a cold wave, and dense fog, a heavy rain warning has been issued for South India. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal will impact several states.
Cold wave and fog continue to prevail in the northern Indian states. According to the IMD, dense fog is likely to prevail in the mornings in northwest India and Bihar for the next five to seven days. Cold day conditions may persist in some areas of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh. The cold wave continues to intensify in Delhi-NCR, recently recording the coldest morning of the season.
The Meteorological Department has issued a cold wave warning for Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Odisha, and northern interior Karnataka on January 10 and 11. In addition, the cold wave is expected to intensify in Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar. A cold wave alert has been issued in Rajasthan from January 11th to 14th.
Due to a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal, many parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Arunachal Pradesh may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall on January 9th and 10th. Heavy rains are also expected in some areas on January 11th. The Meteorological Department has advised fishermen not to venture into the Bay of Bengal and surrounding coastal areas.
Uttar Pradesh is expected to experience some relief from the cold and fog over the next two days. Sunshine may bring a slight increase in temperatures, although drizzle is expected in some areas. Meanwhile, the cold wave and dense fog will continue to affect Bihar. Cold day conditions are expected in some parts of the state on January 10th and 11th.
The Kashmir Valley is currently experiencing a period of "Chilla-e-Kalan." Temperatures have dropped several degrees below freezing, causing parts of Dal Lake in Srinagar to freeze. According to the Meteorological Department, night temperatures are expected to drop further until January 10, with a possible increase of 1 to 2 degrees thereafter.
The effects of cold and changing weather are clearly visible in many cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Lucknow, and Patna. People need to remain vigilant and follow the weather department's advice in the coming days.
