New Delhi: Fresh political tensions erupted in West Bengal after supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) clashed outside the Chanditala Police Station in Hooghly district, leading to injuries and heightened security concerns.

Protest Over Arrests Turns Chaotic

The confrontation unfolded during a TMC protest against the arrest of several party leaders and workers. According to reports, a delegation of TMC representatives had planned to submit a memorandum at the Chanditala Police Station. However, before they could enter the premises, tensions escalated outside the station.

Witnesses reported heated exchanges between supporters of both parties, with sloganeering quickly turning into a physical confrontation. The situation deteriorated rapidly as rival groups gathered near the protest site.

Kalyan Banerjee Injured During Scuffle

Amid the clash, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee sustained injuries. Reports indicated that he suffered a head injury during the unrest and was provided immediate medical attention. The incident triggered further tension in the area as party workers accused each other of provoking the violence.

Police personnel were deployed to bring the situation under control and prevent the confrontation from spreading beyond the station premises.

Incident Follows Attack on Abhishek Banerjee

The Hooghly clash comes just a day after another controversial political incident involving senior TMC leader and MP Abhishek Banerjee in South 24 Parganas district.

During a visit to Sonarpur to meet families allegedly affected by post-poll violence, Banerjee was reportedly targeted by a group of protesters. Stones and eggs were allegedly thrown at him, while some individuals attempted to physically confront him. Videos circulating on social media showed chaotic scenes during the visit.

Following the incident, Banerjee accused the BJP of orchestrating a planned attack and criticised the absence of adequate police protection. Despite the disruption, he continued with his scheduled programme after receiving medical attention in Kolkata.

Political Temperature Continues to Rise

The latest developments highlight the increasingly charged political atmosphere in West Bengal. With allegations, counter-allegations and street-level confrontations continuing between rival parties, authorities are expected to maintain heightened vigilance in sensitive areas across the state in the coming days.
