New Delhi: The BJP on Monday launched a sharp attack on Congress MP Rahul Gandhi over his allegation that Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power and continues to remain in office “because of foreign help”. The ruling party accused the Congress leader of hypocrisy, alleging that he had himself sought foreign intervention in India's internal affairs during overseas visits.

BJP national spokesperson CR Kesavan criticised Gandhi in a post on X, describing him as a “lousy con artist” and claiming that his allegations of foreign interference had repeatedly backfired.

“Rahul Gandhi is such a lousy con artist that his third-rate lies always backfire and end up humiliating him," Kesavan said.

BJP Recalls Rahul Gandhi’s 2023 London Remarks

Kesavan referred to Gandhi's March 2023 visit to the United Kingdom, when the Congress leader addressed British MPs and think tanks and raised concerns about the state of democracy in India.

The BJP spokesperson alleged that Gandhi had called for foreign intervention in India's internal affairs ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

“In 2023, while speaking in London ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, it was Rahul Gandhi who had pleaded and sought foreign interference in India’s internal affairs, stating, ‘It is not just an Indian battle’," Kesavan wrote.

He also shared an old video of Gandhi's interaction in London, in which the Congress leader questioned the response of Western countries, including the United States and European nations, to what he described as democratic backsliding in India.

“So the surprising thing is that the so-called defenders of democracy, which are the United States and European countries, seem to just be oblivious that a huge chunk of the democratic model has come undone, right? That is a real problem with regard to where, frankly, the Opposition is fighting that battle, right? It’s not just an Indian battle. It’s actually a much more important battle…”

BJP Raises George Soros, Hindenburg Controversies

Kesavan also questioned the Congress leadership over its alleged links with the Forum of Democratic Leaders in the Asia-Pacific (FDL-AP).

The BJP has alleged that the organisation received funding from billionaire George Soros' foundation and supported separatist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Why has Congress ducked and dodged addressing the allegations of Sonia Gandhi serving as co-president of the Forum of Democratic Leaders in the Asia-Pacific, which backed the idea of Kashmir as an independent nation and has close links to George Soros?" Kesavan said.

He also referred to the controversy surrounding US short seller Hindenburg Research's reports targeting Indian companies. Kesavan questioned Gandhi's interactions abroad with German academic Cornelia Woll, who heads the Hertie School in Berlin and serves on the board of a Soros-backed institution.

“Why have Rahul Gandhi and the Congress maintained a shady silence on their close association with entities and individuals like Hindenburg, Cornelia Woll, who are intrinsically linked with organisations funded by George Soros?" Kesavan added.

BJP Questions Rahul Gandhi’s Overseas Visits

The BJP spokesperson also criticised Gandhi's frequent foreign visits, arguing that the alleged lack of transparency surrounding his overseas engagements raised questions about his activities as Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

“Why does Rahul Gandhi often disappear on foreign trips? Who does he secretly meet and what is the agenda of these clandestine meetings? The nation demands an answer…” Kesavan said.

Rahul Gandhi Challenges PM Modi to Open Debate

The BJP's remarks followed Gandhi's criticism of PM Modi over his Rashtriya Ekta Diwas address.

In a post on X, the Congress MP challenged the prime minister to an open debate, alleging that the Modi government and India's financial system were being sustained with external assistance.

“I challenge you to an open debate about this. Any stage, any time. Come if you have the guts. You won’t dare, because you are terrified of what I know about you," Gandhi said.

During his address, Modi had warned against what he described as “obstructionist forces” attempting to divide the country and damage India's image from abroad. He urged citizens to recognise and counter such efforts.

PM said, “Certain forces are continuously engaged in conspiracies to divide the country… After more than a decade of frustration and disappointment, these forces have now come out in the open… Who is secretly meeting whom abroad? Whom are anti-India forces supporting? Who is speaking the language of India’s enemies? We must recognise all these patterns and confront them together… Especially the way social media is being weaponised, rumours are being spread, and attempts are being made to tarnish India’s…”
