Bhubaneswar: A low-pressure area formed over the north-west Bay of Bengal off the Odisha coast on Tuesday is likely to intensify into a depression on Thursday, the Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) here said.

The system is likely to move in a north-easterly direction along the Odisha coast, the CEC bulletin said.

Under the influence of the system, widespread rainfall is expected to occur across the state, but heavy to very heavy precipitation may occur in the coastal and northern districts.

High Intensity Rainfall

The high intensity of rainfall is likely to be experienced between May 28 to 30 over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Khurda, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Nayagarh and Ganjam, it said.

There is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the catchment region of rivers Baitarani, Subarnarekha and Budhabalang, the bulletin said, adding widespread rain might favour the onset of the south west monsoon over Odisha by Thursday.

There might be a dry period accompanied by a rise in temperature between June 1 and 3 after which the rainfall is expected to increase, it said.

Red Alert In Mumbai

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a red alert for rains in Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. "Extremely heavy rains" have been predicted, especially in coastal and south interior Karnataka, from Tuesday.

Heavy rains have also been predicted in Konkan and Ghat regions of central Maharashtra.

Monsoon reached Mumbai and Pune on Monday.

Thunderstorms Likely

Thunderstorms with a speed of 50-60 kmph accompanied by lightning and heavy rains are likely on Tuesday. The Maharashtra government has asked citizens to be alert. Heavy to very heavy rains are likely in North Karnataka between May 27 and 30.

Thunderstorms, lightning and squalls are likely to continue in Tamil Nadu till May-end, said IMD.

Chief Minister Reviewed Situation

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is reviewing the situation caused by widespread excessive rains across Maharashtra and has asked the entire administration to be in alert mode.

The Chief Minister office (CMO) said in statement on Monday that the CM has ordered immediate Panchnama in places where damage has occurred. He is in constant touch with the chief secretary of the state and the state disaster management cell.
