Kolkata: The West Bengal government has announced a major revision in the upper age limit for recruitment to various state government services. The changes have been introduced through amendments to the West Bengal Services (Raising of Age-limit) Rules, 1981, according to a notification issued by the state finance department.
The revised norms are expected to provide relief to thousands of job aspirants preparing for state government examinations and recruitment drives.
Under the amended rules, candidates applying for Group A services can now appear for recruitment examinations up to the age of 41 years. The government clarified that posts already carrying a higher permissible age limit will continue to follow the earlier provisions.

For Group B services, the upper age ceiling has been increased to 44 years. Meanwhile, candidates seeking recruitment in Group C and Group D categories will now be eligible up to 45 years of age. The revised rules came into effect from May 11.
The notification further stated that the revised age ceiling would also apply to recruitments conducted outside the Public Service Commission framework under the West Bengal Regulation of Recruitment in State Statutory Bodies, Government Companies and Local Authorities Act, 1999.
In such cases, the maximum permissible age for applicants has also been fixed at 45 years. Officials said the move is aimed at widening employment opportunities and allowing more candidates to participate in the state recruitment process.
The decision comes amid broader administrative changes being introduced by the new government led by Suvendu Adhikari following the 2026 Assembly elections.

The Bharatiya Janata Party secured a decisive victory in the elections, winning 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly and ending the long rule of the Trinamool Congress in the state.
Separately, Chief Minister Adhikari also spoke about promoting Bengali cultural identity on the global stage. In a post on social media, he said Bengal’s cultural heritage and contributions during the Bengal Renaissance would regain prominence under the new administration.
He credited iconic figures such as Rabindranath Tagore for shaping Bengal’s global cultural recognition and said the state was entering a new phase of administrative and cultural transformation.
