DMK Targets Congress Over Support To TVK (Img: Internet)
Chennai: Political tensions have intensified in Tamil Nadu after the M. K. Stalin-led DMK openly criticised Congress for extending support to Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), following the Assembly election results.
During a legislature party meeting on Thursday, the DMK passed a resolution accusing Congress of abandoning the secular alliance immediately after the election outcome. The party described the move as a “major betrayal” and questioned the Congress party’s commitment to coalition politics.
According to the resolution adopted by the DMK, Congress received full support and seat-sharing cooperation during the elections but later chose to back TVK in its bid to form the government.
The DMK alleged that Congress leaders failed to protect alliance interests during the campaign and acted against the coalition’s collective political strategy. The resolution also claimed that Congress engaged in “political manoeuvres” that weakened trust within the alliance.
Senior DMK leaders reportedly expressed anger over the sudden shift in political alignment after the results were declared.
The political row erupted after Congress formally extended support to TVK, which emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
TVK secured 108 seats, falling short of the majority mark of 118 in the 233-member Assembly. Congress, which won five seats, backed Vijay’s claim to form the government, giving fresh momentum to the actor-turned-politician’s push for power.

The development has dramatically altered Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, with the DMK suffering a major setback after losing power in the state.
Earlier, DMK spokesperson Saravanan Anadurai publicly criticised Congress for supporting TVK, calling the move a “backstab” to both the alliance and the people of Tamil Nadu.
He alleged that the mandate given by voters had been disregarded and accused Congress of weakening secular politics in the state.
Meanwhile, TVK continues its efforts to gather additional support from smaller parties and independent legislators to cross the majority mark.
