Chennai: The Indian National Congress on Wednesday announced its support to Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to form the next government in Tamil Nadu, following a hung Assembly verdict. However, the backing comes with specific conditions.

Support Linked to ‘Secular Mandate’

In an official communication, the Congress said its support is contingent upon TVK ensuring that no “communal forces” that do not adhere to constitutional principles are included in the alliance. The party stressed that the electoral verdict reflects a mandate for a secular, progressive, and welfare-oriented government.

Congress Backs Vijay’s TVK; Paving Way for Historic Tamil Nadu Govt

"Our support shall be conditional upon the TVK keeping out from this alliance any communal forces that do not believe in the Constitution of India. This alliance between the TVK and the Tamil Nadu Congress will strive to bring back Perunthalaivar Kamaraj's glory days of Tamil Nadu, with a strong commitment to Thanthai Periyar's social justice ideals and Dr. BR Ambedkar's constitutional ideals in the years and decades to come," the letter added.

The Congress, which secured five seats, has emerged as a key player in the post-election arithmetic despite its limited numbers.

DMK Left Out of Equation

The move signals a shift in political positioning, with Congress choosing to back TVK instead of aligning with the DMK bloc. This decision is likely to reshape alliance dynamics in the state as parties negotiate to form a stable government.

Reference to Ideological Legacy

In its message, Congress invoked the legacy of prominent leaders, stating that the proposed alliance would aim to revive governance inspired by K. Kamaraj’s administrative model, Periyar’s social justice principles, and B.R. Ambedkar’s constitutional vision.

The emphasis on these ideological pillars underlines Congress’s attempt to frame the alliance within a broader political and social narrative.

Government Formation Still Uncertain

TVK had emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly elections but fell short of the majority mark. With Congress extending conditional support, the focus now shifts to whether Vijay can gather the additional numbers required to cross the threshold.

If the numbers fall in place, the Governor may invite TVK to form the government. However, failure to secure sufficient backing could lead to alternative claims or prolonged uncertainty in the state.
