New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi engaged in a heated exchange in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday during a debate on electoral reforms.

The confrontation began when Gandhi interrupted Shah’s address, challenging the Home Minister to discuss his press conferences alleging electoral irregularities. Gandhi insisted on a debate centred on his claims of “vote chori,” escalating tensions in the house.

Rahul Gandhi Demands Debate on Press Conferences

Rahul Gandhi urged Parliament to consider the findings from his three major press conferences held since August 2025. He alleged widespread voter manipulation and fraud in Karnataka and Haryana, citing systematic deletion and duplication of entries in electoral rolls.

Interjecting while Shah spoke, Gandhi said, “Let us have a debate on my press conferences. Amit Shah ji, I challenge you to have a debate on my three press conferences,” highlighting his demand for accountability and transparency from the ruling government.

Shah Defends Electoral Roll Revisions

Responding to Gandhi, Amit Shah defended the government’s approach to Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He stated that the process is designed to sanitize voter lists and address inaccuracies.

“In his press conference, the LoP leveled allegations that the voter list is not corrected and needs to be rectified. So, what is SIR? It is the procedure to sanitize the voter list. He is opposing even when we are undertaking the process,” Shah said.

Shah further criticized the opposition for double standards, asserting that anti-incumbency applies only to those working against public interest. He maintained that the BJP has rarely faced anti-incumbency challenges since 2014 but acknowledged that electoral losses have occurred in the past. “When you win, EC is great. When you lose, EC is useless and works at BJP’s behest,” he added.

Shah Refuses Immediate Debate, Calls for Patience

Shah emphasized that parliamentary proceedings cannot be dictated by Gandhi’s demands. “You can’t run the Parliament with your obstinacy. I will decide the order of my speech. The Parliament won’t function like this. He should be patient. I will answer each and every point,” he asserted.

Gandhi, however, dismissed Shah’s response as defensive, saying it reflected fear rather than a genuine engagement with his concerns. The exchange highlighted ongoing political friction over electoral accountability, with the Opposition pressing the government for answers on alleged voter manipulation, while the ruling party maintained that electoral reforms are being implemented transparently.
