Amit Shah and Rahul Gandhi clash over voter fraud allegations.
New Delhi: The Lok Sabha on Wednesday witnessed an intense confrontation between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The clash centered around allegations of voter fraud, popularly referred to as “vote chori,” in Haryana and Bihar. Rahul Gandhi raised the issue, claiming that Haryana had 19 fake lakh voters, while Amit Shah countered by highlighting that the alleged irregularities involved genuine households and residents. Shah stated that the reported anomalies, such as a 124-year-old voter in Bihar, were administrative errors and did not constitute fraud.
Opposition Walkout and Shah’s Response
In response to Shah’s speech, opposition parties staged a walkout from the Lok Sabha in protest. The Home Minister hit back with sharp remarks, calling the move a reaction to the government’s strict policies on infiltration. He referred to the opposition as ‘ghuspaithiya’ and defended the government’s stance of detecting, deleting, and deporting illegal entrants. Shah emphasized that the NDA-led government never shies away from debate and is committed to addressing all matters constitutionally.

Historical Context and SIR Discussion
Shah reminded the house that the Systematic Internal Review (SIR) was not a new exercise and had been conducted multiple times under Congress governments, including those led by Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. He explained that the Election Commission carries out SIR as part of its constitutional mandate to maintain electoral integrity. Addressing Rahul Gandhi’s specific claims, Shah said that single-family households with multiple generations were being misinterpreted as fraudulent entries in the voters’ list.
Rahul Gandhi Hits Back
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi rejected the Home Minister’s explanation, calling Shah’s response defensive and frightened. He reiterated that Haryana alone has 19 lakh fake voters and pressed for a debate on the transparency of voter lists and the sharing of EVM architecture. Gandhi accused the government of ignoring repeated calls for electoral reforms and expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of accountability in addressing alleged discrepancies.

Shah’s Political Retorts
Shah criticized Congress for blaming the Election Commission or EVMs for poll losses, stating that the party’s leadership was primarily responsible for poor performance in recent elections. He noted that the NDA has won three Lok Sabha polls and 41 state elections since 2014, whereas Congress secured only 30 state polls, challenging their claims of rigged elections. Additionally, Shah highlighted that the Congress had not submitted any suggestions for electoral reforms to the Election Commission since May 2014, emphasizing a lack of proactive engagement from the party.
Parliament Adjourned
Following the heated exchange and the opposition walkout, the Lok Sabha was adjourned at 6:30 pm and will resume at 11 am on Thursday. The session highlighted deepening political tensions over electoral integrity, the functioning of the voter list, and allegations of illegal voting, setting the stage for further debate in the coming days.
