New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written a letter to Om Birla, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, commending his handling of recent parliamentary proceedings and emphasising the need to preserve the dignity of democratic institutions.
The communication came after discussions in the Lok Sabha over a no-confidence motion moved against the Speaker last week.
In his letter, the Prime Minister praised Birla’s “patience, restraint and impartiality” while conducting the proceedings. Modi also said the recent developments in Parliament reflect the emergence of a “new political culture” in the country.
In his message, the Prime Minister stressed that Parliament should remain a forum for dialogue, debate and reasoned discussion. He noted that democratic institutions must reflect the voices of people from every region of the country.
At the same time, Modi expressed concern about attempts by some individuals to limit democratic institutions within narrow political boundaries, stating that such approaches do not align with the broader values of parliamentary democracy.
Responding to the Prime Minister’s letter, Birla expressed gratitude and said Modi has consistently shown strong faith in the traditions and procedures of India’s parliamentary system.
The Speaker remarked that the Prime Minister’s message reflects the principles of public service and democratic values that he has demonstrated throughout his political career, including during his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat.

Separately, Birla also wrote to leaders of political parties in the Lok Sabha expressing concern over the conduct of some Members of Parliament inside the House and within the Parliament complex.
He criticised the use of banners, placards and posters during protests and said such actions undermine the dignity of parliamentary proceedings.
The Speaker urged party leaders to ensure discipline among their members and uphold the traditions of the institution. He added that the conduct of lawmakers is closely watched by citizens and sets the tone for democratic institutions across the country. Birla expressed hope that all political parties would cooperate in maintaining the dignity and prestige of Parliament.
