New Delhi: The political crisis within Shiv Sena (UBT) intensified on Thursday after six of the party's nine Lok Sabha MPs remained absent from a crucial parliamentary party meeting called by Uddhav Thackeray. The development has strengthened speculation that a major split within the party's parliamentary wing is now all but confirmed.
Following the meeting, the Uddhav faction decided to issue show-cause notices to the absent MPs and prepare for a legal challenge against any move to formally merge with the rival Shiv Sena faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
The parliamentary party meeting was convened in Delhi at 11 am. Despite a party whip directing members to attend, only three Lok Sabha MPs were present.
Among those attending were parliamentary party leader Arvind Sawant, senior leader Anil Desai and MP Rajabhau Waje. Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut also participated in the discussions.
The absence of six MPs was viewed by party leaders as a strong indication of an organised rebellion within the parliamentary group.
The six MPs who did not attend the meeting are Sanjay Patil, Nagesh Ashtikar, Sanjay Deshmukh, Omraje Nimbalkar, Bausaheb Wakchaure and Dhananjay Jadhav.
According to party sources, these MPs have reportedly been in contact with the office of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and are believed to be exploring a formal merger with the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction.
The move could significantly alter the balance of power within the party's parliamentary structure.
In response, Shiv Sena (UBT) has decided to seek explanations from the rebel MPs regarding their absence and is preparing to challenge the developments through legal channels.
Party leaders indicated that the matter could eventually reach the Supreme Court if necessary.
Political circles in Delhi are closely watching the situation amid reports that the rebel MPs could formally join the Shinde faction on June 19 or June 20. The timing is considered significant as it coincides with celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the Shiv Sena's founding.
With tensions escalating, the coming days could prove crucial for the future of the party and Maharashtra politics.
