Chennai: In the first phase of Tamil Nadu’s Special Intensive Revision SIR of electoral rolls there was a significant turnout with a large majority of eligible electors submitting enumeration forms. A total of around 5.43 crore out of 6.41 crore registered voters filed their forms as the first stage of the revision concluded showing robust participation across districts and demographic groups. Election officials described this response as overwhelming and indicative of heightened public awareness about the importance of accurate voter records in the run up to forthcoming elections.

Draft Roll Shows Over 97 Lakh Deletions

After the completion of the enumeration phase of the SIR exercise the revised draft electoral roll for Tamil Nadu shows that more than 97 lakh names have been removed from the list of electors. This represents a sharp decrease of about fifteen per cent compared to the previous voter count and is one of the most extensive clean ups seen in the state’s electoral records. The deletion figures emerged with the latest draft showing the number of registered voters now at approximately 5.43 crore after the exercise was carried out across all districts.

Reasons Behind Removal of Voter Names

The deletions from Tamil Nadu’s electoral rolls under the SIR exercise resulted from several key categories identified during verification. A significant number of names were removed because the individuals were found to have permanently shifted residence to other locations or states. A large portion were listed as deceased and were removed from the active rolls. Other entries were found to be duplicates where the same person was registered in more than one place. These adjustments aim to ensure that the electoral roll accurately represents the current population and residency of voters before the final list is prepared.

Draft Electoral Roll Composition After Revision

Following the deletions the revised draft electoral roll lists about 5.43 crore voters across the state reflecting updated population movements and corrections. Officials have noted changes across urban and rural constituencies with major cities showing significant numbers of removed entries due to migration and address changes. This updated draft will now be available for review and scrutiny before it is finalised following the completion of the claims and objections period.

Claims and Objections Period Offers Corrections

Eligible voters whose names do not appear on the revised draft or who find errors in their details have an opportunity to file claims or objections during the window which opened on December nineteen two zero two five and will continue through January eighteen two zero two six. During this time voters can submit applications to have their names re-included correct personal information or address changes. These submissions can be made through various channels including online portals and designated electoral offices ensuring that eligible electors are not inadvertently disenfranchised.

Importance of SIR Ahead of Elections

The Special Intensive Revision SIR exercise in Tamil Nadu is part of a broader nationwide effort to ensure that electoral rolls are clean accurate and up to date ahead of major elections. Accurate voter lists are essential for transparent and fair electoral processes as they help prevent ineligible entries remaining on the rolls and ensure that every eligible citizen’s voice can be counted. The large-scale participation and extensive revisions underline the significance of SIR in strengthening the credibility of the democratic process.
