BJP is likely to cross the 100-seat mark in Assam (Img: Internet)
New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday expressed confidence in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s electoral prospects following the first phase of polling.
Addressing a press conference, he said the party has gained significant momentum and is on track for major victories in both Assam and West Bengal.
Sarma claimed that early trends and voter sentiment indicate strong support for the BJP, adding that the party expects to secure a commanding position as the election progresses.
Highlighting his projections, Sarma said the BJP is likely to cross the 100-seat mark in Assam and could reach 200 seats in West Bengal. He asserted that the party has already performed strongly in the first phase, suggesting a favourable outcome if the trend continues.
He also noted a shift in public mood, stating that voters who were earlier uncertain are now more openly backing the BJP.
Sarma described the current political environment in West Bengal as significantly different from previous elections. He said that based on his experience from earlier campaigns, the level of visible support for the BJP this time is notably higher.
According to him, the outcome may exceed expectations if the momentum seen in the first phase continues into subsequent rounds.
The remarks come after the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 recorded a high voter turnout of over 91 percent. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said the polling percentage in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu was among the highest since Independence.
Several districts in West Bengal reported turnout above 90 percent, reflecting strong voter participation across regions.

Polling was conducted under tight security arrangements across constituencies. Officials ensured smooth voting despite isolated incidents, with a large number of voters turning out to cast their ballots.
The high participation rate has been viewed as a key indicator of voter engagement in the ongoing elections.
The remaining constituencies in West Bengal are scheduled to vote in the next phase, while counting of votes will take place on May 4. Political parties are now intensifying campaigns as the election moves forward.
