Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee intensified her attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party during a rally in Kolkata, indicating broader political ambitions beyond the state.
Addressing supporters, Banerjee said her priority is to defeat the BJP in West Bengal and then expand that effort at the national level with support from other opposition parties. She claimed to “conquer" Delhi after securing a victory in the state assembly polls.
She maintained that her focus is not on holding office but on challenging the ruling party’s influence.

Speaking in the Chowringhee area ahead of the next phase of polling, Banerjee criticised the BJP’s political approach and expressed confidence in her party’s ability to retain power in the state.
She also accused the BJP of targeting political opponents and asserted that her party would continue to resist such actions. Her speech reflected a combative campaign tone as elections progress.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah responded to Banerjee’s remarks, dismissing her claims about expanding her political influence beyond West Bengal.
While campaigning in Kolkata, Shah questioned the feasibility of her plans, suggesting that her party’s position within the state would determine its future prospects.
The developments come amid the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, where the contest between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP remains intense.
The first phase of polling, held on April 23, recorded a high voter turnout of over 91%, reflecting strong public participation. Political leaders from both parties have been actively campaigning ahead of the next phase.
The second phase of elections, which includes key constituencies in Kolkata such as Chowringhee, is scheduled for April 29. The results will be announced on May 4.
