Coimbatore: Several members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were detained by police in Coimbatore on Tuesday after staging a protest against the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government over the alleged absence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s photograph and information boards about central welfare schemes at ration shops across the state.
The demonstration was organised by the BJP’s Central Government Welfare Unit in the Shivanantha Colony area, where party members gathered to demand that ration shops display the Prime Minister’s photograph and information boards related to the government’s food welfare schemes.

According to party leaders, the protest was held following guidance from district BJP president Ramesh Kumar. A large number of party workers assembled in the area and attempted to stage a hunger strike as part of their demonstration.
The protesters accused the M. K. Stalin-led Tamil Nadu government of deliberately avoiding the display of the Prime Minister’s image while placing stickers and photographs of DMK leaders at ration shops.
BJP leaders said the protest was intended to highlight what they described as “misleading the public” regarding central government welfare schemes.
Police intervened during the protest and detained several participants. According to officials, the gathering did not have the required permission to hold a hunger strike in the Shivanantha Colony area.
BJP leaders, however, claimed that they had applied for permission but did not receive any response from the authorities. They alleged that the police action was unjustified and said the protesters were engaged in a peaceful demonstration.

During the operation, police personnel removed chairs, banners and party flags that had been set up for the protest.
District BJP president Ramesh Kumar criticised the police action, stating that the party had sought permission for the protest and should not have been detained without prior notice.
He said the demonstration was a moral protest aimed at demanding transparency in the display of information related to central government welfare schemes at ration shops across Tamil Nadu.
Police later confirmed that the detained protesters were taken into custody as part of standard law-and-order procedures.
