Chennai: Vijay led the TVK government in Tamil Nadu, examining a proposal to serve chicken biryani once a week to students in government schools under the Mid-Day Meal Scheme. Rajmohan, Minister for School Education, proposed the idea of serving Chicken Biryani to CM Vijay.
While speaking on the proposal , Rajmohan said that every government in the state has strengthened school nutrition in its own way. He said, "Kamarajar introduced the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, Kalaignar Karunanidhi added eggs, MGR transformed it into the Nutritious Meal Programme, and Jayalalithaa expanded egg distribution throughout the week. Likewise, I have a wish to introduce chicken biryani once a week in government schools.”
The media reports claim that the Chicken Biryani proposal is currently under consideration by CM Vijay; the final decision has yet to be taken regarding the upgradation in the Mid-Day meal.
The mid-day meal was introduced in Tamil Nadu back in the 1950s by former CM K. Kamarajar, which laid the foundation of one of India’s most celebrated social welfare scheme.
MK Stalin’s government launched the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme, which was later renamed the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Scheme to provide breakfast to primary school students.
If the Chicken Biryani proposal is approved, this will be one of the most significant upgradations in Tamil Nadu’s mid-day meal menu in recent years.
He further share plan to revamp the existing school breakfast menu. The current allocation for breakfast is around Rs 15 per student; the minister said that the state government intends to replace repetitive items such as wheat and rava upma with more nutritious and appetising alternatives.
